The Seattle coffee community met at Preserve & Gather last Wednesday for a cup tasters challenge, the first of many events from NW Space Agency. NWSA is a new organization that has teamed up with the Institute for Washington’s Future to bring coffee skill events like this as well as roundtable discussions, co-roasting opportunities and several other events to the NW community. Visions is proud to sponsor and support the NW Space Agency.

Brian Hernandez (Morsel) took the cupping crown with Sam B. (Cherry Street) coming in second. There are three more tasters cup events slated for 2016 with the finals taking place in December.

East Coast Coffee Madness in Montreal

eccm-blog

We recently had the pleasure of sponsoring and attending the East Coast Coffee Madness (ECCM) event held at Kittel Coffee in Montreal Canada. ECCM was a “one day event, built for the coffee community around the vision ‘Meet + Learn + Grow’” and that’s certainly what it was. Attendees started to arrive around 8am and were welcomed by the super cool Le Pista Cafe Mobile. Le Pista is a pedal powered mobile espresso cafe! Propane heats the espresso machine and the bike pedals are hooked up to control the grinder. We were super stoked to see such a cool setup and enjoy a great shot of espresso from Le Pista.

There were speakers from all over the world and from all corners of the industry. 2015 UK Barista champ and co-owner of Colonna & Small’s, and Colonna & Hunter in Bath, England Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood presented his talk on all things water. You can buy his new book Water For Coffee here. The keynote speaker for the day was the world famous coffee master himself Mr. George Howell. Our favorite quote from his talk was “Pursuing quality is a passion, a compulsion.”.

After a couple of solid talks and a fair amount of coffee it was time to take a break and get some food in our bodies. Our good friends over at La Marzocco hooked attendees up with a great lunch and L’Abeille Jus provided some amazing juices to keep us going for the next round of workshops.

The second half of the day was all about workshops and the much anticipated Brew-Off competition! Maxwell continued to educate us about water and how different components in water affect the taste of our brews. Visions was very happy to support the workshop with electric kettlesscales, and timers. We only had two brave baristas compete head to head for the Brew-Off and oddly enough neither of them were from Canada. Joshua Littlefield of Irving Farm Coffee in NYC used the Kalita 185 and Rich Cummins from Under Line Coffee also NYC used the one hole Bonmac. Both gentlemen did a great job but it was Rich that came out on top. Rich took home $400 graciously provided by InterAmerican Coffee and some sweet gear provided by Eight Ounce CoffeeVisions Espresso Services. Josh left with a new eXo tamp and Revolution porcelain cups!

East Coast Coffee Madness was a huge success! Visions is very much looking forward to supporting the ECCM again next year and meeting even more talented baristas. See you next year!
